Hakone: A One-Night Getaway to Scenic Views, Art, and Hospitality
Hakone offers the perfect escape where you can enjoy breathtaking views of Mount Fuji, the wonders of nature, world-class art, and the traditional hospitality of a Japanese hot spring inn—all in just one night.
On a weekend in early November, We spontaneously decided to visit Hakone. It was peak travel season, and most hot spring inns were fully booked. Determined to find the right place, we discovered that Nanpuso, a highly-rated inn on travel sites, miraculously had one room available. We quickly reserved it and began planning our trip.
We left Tokyo early to make the most of the day. Our first stop was Owakudani, a volcanic valley created by a massive steam explosion 3,000 years ago. Even today, sulfurous steam rises from the vents, creating an otherworldly atmosphere. We enjoyed the famous black eggs boiled in the hot springs, said to add seven years to your life with each egg you eat. Even our young, pre-school-aged son joined in! 🥚

Next, we circled Lake Ashinoko, stopping at scenic viewpoints along the Ashinoko Skyline road, including the stunning Mikuni Pass, to take in the majestic views of Mount Fuji. For lunch, we stopped at Ashinoko Chaya, a lakeside restaurant near the Hakone Pirate Ship terminal. We enjoyed a delicious meal featuring local specialties like wakasagi fish from Lake Ashinoko, along with a variety of Japanese side dishes.

In the afternoon, we visited the Hakone Open-Air Museum in Kowakudani. With our child in tow, this visit felt entirely different from our previous one. We explored the outdoor exhibits with fresh eyes, engaging with the art physically and emotionally. The highlight was the Symphonic Sculpture, a breathtaking stained-glass tower with panoramic views from the top.
Afterward, we checked in at Nanpuso. The inn had recently been renovated, with both public areas and our Japanese-style room feeling fresh and inviting. The warm hospitality of the staff, from our room attendant to the porter, was exceptional. Dinner was served in our room, and the meal was delightful. We ended the day soaking in the rejuvenating hot springs, a perfect close to an active day.

The next morning, we visited the Okada Museum of Art, immersing ourselves in Japanese and East Asian art. A special exhibition, Traveling Through the Fifty-Three Stations of the Tokaido: Mount Fuji, Rimpa, and Jakuchu, was particularly captivating.
Before heading home, we stopped by the historic Fujiya Hotel, a place full of memories for us. We couldn’t leave without picking up their famous apple pie, packed with fresh apples, from their bakery. It was the perfect sweet ending to our trip.

In just one night, Hakone offered us a magical mix of nature, art, and hospitality. From the steaming valleys of Owakudani to the quiet elegance of a traditional inn, this trip reminded us why Hakone remains a beloved getaway destination.
